If you Don’t Ask, You are Stupid – THREE Times Over

Let’s face it – some people have difficulty asking for help. Apparently it is more prevalent among people who suffered deep or repeated disappointments in their youth – although for many years it was simply seen as a “male ego” thing…

(before the age of GPS, most males refused to ask for directions when they were lost, instead insisting that they knew where they were going. I wonder how many hours, gasoline and billions of miles were lost worldwide because of this… And yes, I am guilty, too…:)

But what ever the reason for not asking when in doubt – be it the ego, be it arrogance, be it the fear of humiliation, or be it from a deep rooted psychological issue…

The fact remains that, if you don’t ask, you will remain stupid – in THREE ways:

1. You will – obviously – not have an immediate answer to your question. You may be able to figure it out over time, but at what cost (from unnecessary mistakes), and how long will it take you?

Depending on the circumstances surrounding the question, you may also end up losing an opportunity because you simply didn’t make the choice right away.

2. You don’t know what you don’t know. And the only way to address that as by learning, or acquiring more knowledge. If you don’t ask, for whatever reason, you may never find out what else you need/want to know in order to make a sensible decision.

Once you get an answer to a serious question, you will probably have some more questions – since by then you have an idea about what you “don’t know”. However, if you never asked the question in the first place, you will never know the answers to those questions…

But hey, ignorance is bliss – because if you don’t know what you don’t know what you don’t know…

You have no idea how stupid your next choice may be, or what the consequences (for yourself and others) may be.

Lastly:

As kids, we all go through a phase where we have an insatiable curiosity. We keep on asking why, why, why…

And eventually we tire out the grownups around us, and we are told to buzz off.

At some point, “we get the point” – and stop asking questions…

But we shouldn’t.

Because you never know what you don’t know.

And you will never know just how much you can discover, and how it can impact your life (even if only in the future) if you don’t ask.

Because as long as you don’t know what you don’t know…

You remain stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Ok, maybe just ignorant – but doing so is still stupid.
